Vermont Science Olympiad

March 14, 2020

Free

For the past 35 years, Science Olympiad has led a revolution in science education. What began as a grassroots assembly of science teachers is now one of the premier science competitions in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to nearly 7,800 teams in 50 states. Science Olympiad’s ever-changing line-up of events in all Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines exposes students to practicing scientists and career choices and energizes classroom teachers with a dynamic content experience.

The 2020 Science Olympiad State Tournament will be hosted by the University of Vermont, where you’ll join many like-minded STEM enthusiasts. Learn more by visiting our website.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON COVID19

As you know, the Vermont Science Olympiad organizing team has been continuously monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and its potential impacts on the Vermont community. In light of recent developments and in the interest of the health and safety of our community, the organizing team has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Vermont Science Olympiad tournament. The safety of our Vermont community is our number one priority.

We understand that this decision comes at great disappointment to judges, coaches, and students who have dedicated time preparing for this event and were looking forward to competing on Saturday. We applaud all of the hard work and commitment of everyone in the Science Olympiad community and look forward to resuming planning for next year’s event.

We ask that coaches please communicate this decision to their participating students as soon as possible. We will be in touch shortly to arrange for a refund of your entry fee.

Please see also the following message from the National Science Olympiad, which has received notice of multiple cancellations in other states:

Message from Science Olympiad:
Science Olympiad respects the host entity’s judgment and supports the decision to cancel the tournament. While we know there will be disappointment among students, coaches, supervisors and parents after all the hard work that has been put into their season, we need to put health and safety first. We encourage teams to prepare for next year; our state leaders will focus on planning events and generating excitement for the upcoming season. The idea of hosting virtual tournaments has come up; however, Science Olympiad’s Commercial General Liability insurance does not cover virtual tournaments. Due to the nature of coronavirus (COVID-19) precautions on social distancing and community spread, rescheduling is an unlikely option.

Thanks again for your commitment to science and education. Please feel free to be in touch with any questions.
